Remodeling projects often include purchasing new furniture, appliances and electronics. This is a great time to ask yourself if you could list and prove ownership of what you own, because it is something you will be required to do if you have a fire, tornado, burglary or other disaster. This is time-consuming and difficult enough to do at your leisure, but it can be an enormous, almost impossible task when under the emotions of having just endured a major loss!
Create an inventory of the contents of your home. Include detailed photographs and a written report which includes when the items were purchased, the cost of each, the manufacturer’s name and model and serial numbers where applicable. Also list identifying marks on artwork and collectables.
Review your contents coverage with your insurance agent to ensure you are fully covered. Your inventory will help you and your agent determine if you need to schedule specific items such as collectables, jewelry, etc.
Store your inventory in a safe place off site and update your information annually.
