September 2011 Newsletter

We’re marking another awesome year in business this month!

As we look back to see and share the Best Of selections and tips for our readers, there’s a common thread—quality coupled with craftsmanship. Take a look and the coolest stuff in our projects and then read through some great tips from our partners. We know you will find something useful as you make updates to your house this fall.

Made You Look! Check Out This Fiberglass Door
We care about the looks of each and every product we use in our remodels. In a recent project, we recommended a ThermaTru fiberglass door to avoid the upkeep required by wooden doors. People see it and think it’s actually wood! It has good looks, durability and low maintenance.
Cool Cabana Room
We created a fun and functional area for the family to eat, play and hang out together. Just off the main room is a bathroom with an added urinal for the boys. Along with a fridge and sink, a custom ice maker was installed that makes soft n’ crunchy ice. Even a custom doggie door was bricked in to the exterior. This poolside retreat was a big hit for the family and their friends!
Pergola Perfection
Whether they’re in the middle of a garden or a centerpiece for your lawn, pergolas create an inviting element to an outdoor environment. We added the SGR touch to this existing framework, transforming it into a classy shelter with beautiful detail and craftsmanship.
Be Your Own Barista
Our client’s dream was to have a coffee bar in their house. As soon as they shared their dream, we went right to work designing how the cabinets and equipment would fit seamlessly into their new kitchen. We also created more room to walk, more countertop space, and an island with built-in spice racks and stove.
We Got Ya’ Covered
One way we ease our clients’ minds is by working with the best building materials on the market. In our “Backyard Bliss” project, we used AZEK trim and moulding to eliminate the worry of rotting, splitting, cracking, and even insect damage. With that in mind, our client can sit back, relax and breath easy.
Heat Yer Feet
Folks like how we combine function and form in our remodeling projects. Hey, we’re homeowners, too, and we understand the value of improving everyday life with home renovation. Tired of cold floors during Fall and Winter months? Treat your feet to a warm walk on heated flooring!

Steve Gray … on fall maintenance
It is important to clean gutters and downspouts frequently throughout the fall to prevent buildup of leaves and other debris. Neglected gutters can lead to wood rot problems, pest infestations, wet basements, foundation damage and many other expensive complications. Also, check to ensure water drains properly. Poor drainage can cause damage to foundations, driveways and walkways. Be sure water is not coming down behind gutters and that all support brackets are securely in place. If you haven’t checked them yet, be sure to do so before the worst of winter hits us.

Conceptual architect Gary Nance … on communicating ideas for your kitchen
Ask yourself lots of questions. What do you desire and need in your kitchen? How do you live in your kitchen? What are your cooking habits (or quick heating habits, as is the case for some)? Are you a Costco shopper or farmer’s market family? That requires different storage. Write it all down to share with a remodeler. The more we know the better we can design for your needs.

Ferguson’s Diana Dinges … on bathroom selections
Simplify bathroom selections: When making your plumbing selections, don’t get bogged down with all the details. Most bathrooms are set up so faucets are the main focal point. We recommend picking out your faucet first, and then letting a professional consultant find complementary selections. You make one decision; we fill in your entire bathroom. Easy!

Tremain Tile Marble and Granite owner Jesse Tremain … on granite countertop maintenance
Counters are sealed when they are installed. There is an easy test to figure out when tops need resealed after years of use. Sprinkle water onto the surface. Does it bead and ball up or does it absorb into the surface? If it dissipates into the surface, it is time to invest in resealing.

Indy Craft Kevin Kinder … on choosing paint
Pick your color family. Choose a complementary color palate from furniture, for example, for a favorable impact as opposed to matching the same color from the fabrics for the walls. Also consider art and other items on display in the room. Many times a neutral backdrop will highlight a piece. If a room is less decorated, choosing a bolder color can be used to make a statement.

ThermaTru… on choosing efficient doors for your home
Wood doors are beautiful, yes, but there are limitations to that beauty. The wood absorbs moisture; it can peel, bubble and bow. Wood doors usually require regular maintenance, too. The other option is a steel door, which can easily be dented and the paint can scratch. The third option is a fiberglass door, which provides the lowest maintenance. These doors have come a long way and there are many options that look like wood, but offer low maintenance and long-lasting look.
