Paint is one of the simplest ways to freshen up the look of any room. Kevin Kinder with Indy Craft Painting, a Steve Gray Renovations partner, says trendy interior paint colors today lean towards hues from yellow to pink, as well as many earth tones such as greens, tans, and even black. Yet he says what is most important is for homeowners to play an active role in making the final decision on their home’s interior colors. He offers these tips to help select a palate that you’ll love for years.

Samples, samples, samples. Should we say it again? Samples. Paint a “sample” area on a wall or trim and look at it under the lighting of the room. Walk by at different times of day and night to see how the changing artificial and natural lighting will affect it.

What’s the effect? Consider the psychological effect the color will have and where you are applying it. For example, red causes excitability and may not be the best choice for a child’s bedroom!

Pick your color family. Choose a complementary color palate from furniture, for example, for a favorable impact as opposed to matching the same color from the fabrics for the walls. Also consider art and other items on display in the room. Many times a neutral backdrop will highlight a piece. If a room is less decorated, choosing a bolder color can be used to make a statement.
